This practice was the subject of a PR stunt by Pierre Beaumarchais (“boh-mar-SHAY”) in which he offered to donate profits from the 50th performance of the Marriage of Figaro to the impoverished. For over 100 years, France maintained a 1769 “bureau” for people who did this practice professionally and were monitored under the 1874 Roussel Law. In 1910, a “floating” facility that later merged with Tufts established the first American “bank” to aid people in performing this practice.
