Tossup
This instrument alternates the augmented octaves G-flat – G-natural and F-natural – F-sharp to conclude Morton Feldman’s Principal Sound. This is the only instrument that plays in every section of Philip Glass’s Music in 12 Parts. Four of these instruments play the tones of an E dominant eleventh chord in gradually augmented rhythmic values in a piece in which they are accompanied by maracas. That piece by Steve Reich was first played on ones manufactured by Farfisa. One of these instruments in Halberstadt, Germany will keep playing, until 2640, John Cage’s As Slow as Possible. Orchestral musicians silhouetted against colored light play Leopold Stokowski’s arrangement of a piece for this instrument in the opening segment of Disney’s Fantasia. For 10 points, name this instrument for which J. S. Bach wrote a Toccata and Fugue in D minor. ■END■
